A new fantasy anime series titled Black Cat and the Witch Class (Japanese: Kuroneko to Majo no Kyoushitsu) is set to begin its broadcast this spring. The story follows a young woman who cannot perform magic but is determined to become a witch. One day she awakens a grumpy black cat that speaks and asks it to teach her the craft. The series is directed by Naoyuki Tatsuwa, who previously worked on series such as Monster Stories and Pretend Love.
The anime adapts a manga by Yosuke Kaneda, the creator known for Julietta of the Boarding School. The project was announced in the summer of 2025, and the first episode is scheduled to air on April 12, 2026.
Producers have revealed that two seasons will be produced back-to-back, with each season expected to consist of twelve episodes. Animation production is handled by the Japanese studio LIDENFILMS, which has been responsible for titles including Tokyo Revengers, Song of the Night Owls, and Yamada and the Seven Witches.
The release schedule for the first season has been announced as follows: episode 1 on April 12, 2026; episode 2 on April 19, 2026; episode 3 on April 26, 2026; episode 4 on May 3, 2026; episode 5 on May 10, 2026; episode 6 on May 17, 2026; episode 7 on May 24, 2026; episode 8 on May 31, 2026; episode 9 on June 7, 2026; episode 10 on June 14, 2026; episode 11 on June 21, 2026; and episode 12 on June 28, 2026.
The plot centers on the renowned sorcerer Claude Sirius, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances and was afterward the subject of rumors accusing him of betrayal. For the aspiring witch Spiki Virgo he remains an enduring idol: she longs to be brave and powerful like Claude but cannot even cast basic spells. After falling from her broom once again, Spiki accidentally wakes a black cat and hears it grumble—this cat not only speaks but knows magic. Seizing the opportunity, Spiki asks the cat to teach her so that, in return, she can lift a curse that afflicts him.
