Jensen Huang Acknowledges Player Concerns About DLSS 5’s AI-Like Visuals While Defending the Technology’s Intent

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, in a recent discussion with Lex Fridman, addressed renewed player dissatisfaction with DLSS 5 and adopted a noticeably less categorical tone than in earlier remarks.

DLSS 5 is presented by Nvidia as a real‑time neural rendering system that enriches frames with additional detail and photorealistic lighting. Many players, however, reacted negatively, saying the result looks more like a generic AI filter than a faithful enhancement of a game’s original visual style.

The backlash focused on complaints that DLSS 5 alters the artistic look of games, replacing distinct visual styles with a smoother, what some call a "plastic" AI-rendered appearance. After the initial announcement, Huang had previously told gamers they were "completely wrong," a response that only intensified discussion around the feature.

In the newer conversation Huang took a more conciliatory stance. He said he "understands what people think" about DLSS 5 and admitted that he personally does not like what he called "AI trash." "I think their point of view makes sense, and I understand why they think that," he emphasized. "Generated AI content, though often beautiful, increasingly looks similar to other generated content."

Huang also reiterated Nvidia’s position that DLSS 5 does not rewrite an artist’s work. As he put it, "The artist sets the geometry, and we remain true to it. ... It improves each frame, but it doesn't change anything," arguing that the technology is intended to enhance rather than replace creators’ intent.

Despite that defense, technical details released about DLSS 5 show that the system’s inputs are a two‑dimensional rendered frame and motion vectors. In other words, the neural model does not directly use the three‑dimensional geometry authored by developers when producing its output, a fact that helps explain some of the concerns voiced by artists and players.

Nvidia plans to ship DLSS 5 in the coming months, with a general release expected in the autumn. The debate over how best to use neural upscaling and neural rendering in games—balancing technical advances with respect for artistic style—remains active across the industry.
